Inspired by one, who inspires us all; the second annual Rheannabowl is an event inspired by Rheanna Trepanier. In 2016, at ten years old, she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given a year to live. She created “Rheanna’s Bucket List” to make the most out of the time she had left. With the help of family, friends, doctors, nurses and kind strangers, Rheanna is still here and still ticking items off her list. The Rheannabowl aims to honour Rheanna’s resilience and to support families like Rheanna’s going through an unexpected cancer diagnosis and all the difficulties that brings.
Proceeds from the event go to supporting the Kids with Cancer Society. They work to identify and meet the needs of children with cancer and their families from the time of diagnosis throughout treatment and beyond, through support, clinical programs and research.
On October 31, 2016, Rheanna Trepanier was picked up from school complaining of a bad headache, sore eyes, and feeling sick to her stomach. Marrissa Trepanier, Rheanna’s mother, brought her into the Stollery where she was rushed into surgery. After various examinations and tests, the family received terrible news. The doctors found four malignant brain tumors.
Over the next few days, Rheanna was repeatedly on the operating table; she had to endure three brain surgeries and a blood transfusion to decrease the built-up pressure in her brain. It was only days later Rheanna’s tenth birthday that she was diagnosed terminal.
Ten years old with terminal brain cancer and given less than a year to live, she decided to create, “Rheanna’s Bucket List” to make the most out of the time she has left. With help from some kind-hearted people that were touched by her story, Rheanna got to tick some items off her bucket list. Driving a tank on the army base, dog sledding in the Northwest Territories, meeting Connor McDavid, and tours of news and radio stations are just a few examples of her amazing experiences.
Not that we aren't dog people, but dogs will not be permitted at this event.
